    Overview

    The Ammonium Iodide (NH4I) Injector fitted to the Phoenix series of fusion machines enables the automatic addition of a pre-weighed tablet at a selected time during the sample preparation process.


    Halides, such as, bromides (Br) or Iodides (I) are used to increase the surface tension of the lithium borate melt. In conjunction with the 5% gold in the platinum alloy crucible and mould, this aids the release of the glass melt from the crucible and the glass disc from the mould. NH4I is used because the ammonium ion is loss during fusion and iodide is the most efficient releasing halide.

    An added advantage is obtained with this method for those samples that leave a glass residue in the crucible/mouldable by combining the glass melt together prior to the pouring and cooling process. A greater percent of the total melt is poured ensuring the total melt is poured from the crucible into the mould. As a consequence, the crucible is easier to clean.
